    Reflective equilibrium and logical pluralism

    Abílio Rodrigues (UFMG)

    ONLINE | Link Zoom

Abstract: The aim of this talk is twofold. First, we present a view of logical pluralism according to which some subclassical logics, equipped with non-classical negations, can coexist peacefully with classical logic because they are characterized as preserving different semantic notions. Intuitionistic logic interpreted in terms of a notion of constructive proof that still accepts non-constructive proofs as legitimate and paraconsistent logics interpreted in terms of preservation of information are perfectly compatible with classical consequence defined in terms of preservation of truth. Second, following D. Prawitz and L. C. Pereira, we argue that the rejection of classically valid inferences by some subclassical logics can be explained by extending to logic the notion of reflective equilibrium. Accordingly, the revision of a logic is a two-way direction process between general logical principles and local reasoning. In order to improve our inferential practices, we reflect on the inferences that are successful and those that are not successful in particular argumentative contexts. In a number of cases, when an inference goes wrong, we notice that some semantic notion has not been transmitted from the premises to the conclusion, and we adjust the inferences that are considered valid in that particular context. Eventually, we may reach a point where a formal system suitable for expressing the deductive behavior of that semantic notion is obtained. (Joint work with Marcos Silva)
